In a bid to bolster the availability of long-term residential housing, the BC Government has introduced the Short-Term Rental Accommodations Act, poised to bring significant changes for numerous homeowners.
Enhancing short-term rental regulations across most major BC communities, effective May 1, 2024, in an effort to increase the supply of long term residential housing by:
- Limiting short-term rentals to the host’s primary residence and one secondary suite or accessory dwelling unit (ADU).
- Granting regional districts the authority to license short-term rentals outside municipal boundaries.
- Mandating data sharing from short-term rental platforms to ensure effective monitoring and enforcement.
- Eliminating legal non-conforming use or grandfathering of historical short-term rental arrangements.
- Establishing a provincial registry for short-term rentals, accompanied by a dedicated compliance and enforcement unit.
